300 reasons not to see "300"

Published by rocjoe at 7:29 PM under Entertainment

Fifteen minutes in, and I’m certain I had the right idea never to watch this movie. You see, it was a moment of weakness when I chose this movie... That is, I didn’t see any better choices. Now I know... ANYTHING would have been a better choice.

Mostly, I’m not unimpressed how they’ve brought out just about every end-of-movie cheap trick and we’re only 20 minutes in! The slo-mo scenes the mystical vignettes and the dramatic pauses played out before any tension is raised. I mean, really now, that’s not just a little much, it’s too much!

I suppose what we know about ancient Greece in mostly statues, so I shouldn’t be so surprised that the best they can do with a story from this age is at best, a collection of talking statues -the writers of the movie put too much faith in the comic books ability to develop character or plot! Graphic novels look good, they don’t read good.

I could give you 298 more reasons, but I’ve just decided I’m not going to watch this long enough to come up with the rest. Yechh.

To All Managers: By Not Preparing, You Trivialize Your Own Projects

Published by rocjoe at 7:55 PM under Tech | Sofware Development

Are we co-workers, or what?

To all managers: doing your job isn't just deciding what needs to get done. Shit, that's the easy part. But when you sit on an idea for months and months, then start rushing people to wrap up their other projects to get on to your work, at least have the courtesy to have stuff prepared. Nothing major...

  1. How about writing down your goals for starters? Not writing anything out convinces your co-workers you don't know what you're asking for.
  2. When you leave it up to no one to do your job, then no-one is going to do your job. Before you delegate, you must articulate. We're not going to guess. This isn't a game.
  3. Don't piss me off by acting all pissed off when I ask you to meet me halfway. As a manager, preparation is the most significant thing you do in your job.
  4. When I do a good job it makes you look good. If you frustrate me at every turn, why would I care if you look good or not?

I could go on, but you'll never listen with your head that far up your ass.

How things have changed

Published by rocjoe at 9:37 PM under Tech

How things have changed! Ten years ago, I'd open a new Word doc, and be affined a template for faxes, Memos, etc. But today, the first option was "Blog Post"... actually, it was the only option! So that's where were arrived to. It's a nice change and now I wonder what to expect in 10 years time...

This edition of Word is "Home & Student" and the most interesting part is there are no need templates. This "Blog Post" is really a different configuration of Word and not a template. Is the lack of templates because this is a non-business version of Word, or is this a sign of the times? It would seem people are moving away from the need for templates. I really believe the "get the work done with a form" mode of work was really borne from the generation before me. Now, they're getting into retirement age, the interest in templates data is dying out... Perhaps the relational database is the next thing to go as that too is from the generation before mine.
